AUSTIN, Texas – The longest-tenured track meet in the lone star state will once again take place in Austin, Texas this week, the 91st such running of the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. Among the participating institutions will be the track and field team from Stephen F. Austin, looking to continue what has been a strong start to the 2018 outdoor season. SFA wrapped up competition at the UTSA Roadrunner Invitational and Victor Lopez Classic over the weekend, and saw numerous personal bests capped off by a record-setting performance in the men's 4x100 relay.
"I definitely think we've made some progress in the opening part of our outdoor season over where we were last year," said SFA head track and field coach Phil Olson. "TCU was a good start for us, we got in and got out of there, competed well in our events and came out of there healthy. Then this past weekend at UTSA we had a school record in the 4x100, we had PR's left and right, we're just doing things really well and I'm thrilled in the direction we're headed, because it's definitely the right direction."
The four-day Texas Relays event spans from Wednesday to Saturday, and will feature a mix of the usual events as well as an emphasis on relays, as the name might suggest. In addition to the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, a 4x200 relay and 4x800 relay will also take place at the meet. SFA will bring about 40 athletes to the meet, with an emphasis on qualifying for the finals of as many events as possible amidst a tough, competitive field.
Taking place at Mike A. Myers Stadium, the event will feature competition by 712 high school teams, 195 college/university teams as well as 450 other athletes, including professional athletes. A total of 7,011 athletes will compete at the event, representing 35 states and 21 countries.
"This is relays weekend, so you want to get your best relays out there, and we hope that our relays will start early and stay late, as far as making the finals on Saturday," added Olson. "That helps your national reputation as well as your reputation in the state of Texas, and it's also a great recruiting tool as well. With all the high school kids there at the meet, when we compete well they see that and become more interested in being a Lumberjack, and so it's a win-win for us."
In a large meet with a focus on relays, it is a timely performance of ground-breaking magnitude from the men's 4x100 relay team that will lead SFA into the week's performance. The team of Aaron Piper, Jared Love, Tedrick Hawkins and Khalil Lacy shattered the five-year old program record of 40.24, finishing second in the event with a time of 39.71. That mark is the second fastest in the event in the Southland Conference this season and ranks 13th nationally.
Numerous other successes also abounded from the UTSA Roadrunner Invitational and Victor Lopez Classic over the weekend, with athletes across all events achieving new personal bests or finishing within the top eight of their event, and in some cases, both.
The entirety of the Texas Relays will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network, with a total of 13.5 hours of coverage planned for the event. This year's meet also will be available online at espn3.com and via the ESPN app for smartphones and tablets for fans with a subscription to LHN from an affiliated provider. The Friday evening session will showcase some of the non-traditional outdoor relay events with the sprint medley and distance medley for the high School and university/college levels. Several other premier high school events will be featured on Friday night, including the 1,600 meters and 300m hurdles along with 4x400-meter relay prelims.
Saturday's schedule of competition will kick off at 8:15 a.m., beginning with the high school 3,200-meter races. The final session of the meet is set to kick off at 4:05 p.m. on Saturday.
