Ladyjacks go up 3-0 on Lions early

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Trying to build on their first win of the season and secure consecutive triumphs for the first time since March 11-12, 2017, the Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team jumped out to a 3-0 lead over visiting Southeastern Louisiana Sunday only to see that lead evaporate in a 4-3 setback to the Lion at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
SFA won the doubles points and received a pair of two-set triumphs on the first and third singles lines but Southeastern Louisiana claimed three-set wins at second, fourth, fifth and sixth singles matches to secure the win.
Offsetting a 6-2 loss by Siân Payne and Gabi Guilarte in number two doubles, Darinka Tiboldi and Nida Kamal pushed through Jiva de Veer and Fleur Holtkamp for a 6-3 victory on the top line. In the third flight, Kaja Ljubic and Armelle Cerdan took down Kayta Cornejo and Dany Raygadas 6-2 to hand SFA an early 1-0 lead.
Guilarte surrendered just three games to Madina Vorotnikova in a 6-2, 6-1 victory in top line singles while Tiboldi pulled out a close 6-4, 6-4 win over Raygadas in the number three flight before the Lions started battling back.
Ljubic saw her five-match winning streak in singles play come to an end after suffering a 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 loss to Ceci Mercier on the number four line. Cerdan claimed an early 1-0 lead over Dahlmans in number five singles by posting a 7-6 win, but conceded the next two sets by scores of 6-4, 6-1.
With their lead down to just one, SFA the Ladyjacks saw Payne even up her second-flight singles match against Holtkamp at 1-1 by registering a 6-4 win in the second set after dropping set one 7-6. Unfortunately, Holtkamp was able to tie things up with her 6-3 win in the third and final set.
On the number-six singles line, Kamal posted a 7-5 triumph in her opening set against Cornejo before falling 7-6, 6-3 to end the match.
Another Southland Conference match looms for the Ladyjacks who take aim at their first road win of the 2018 campaign Saturday afternoon in Natcihtoches, La. There, SFA faces off against Northwestern State at 1:00 p.m. from the Jack Fisher Lady Demon Tennis Complex.
