NACOGDOCHES, Texas – In what will be the final tune-up for the team before competing in the Southland Conference Indoor Championships later this month, the Stephen F. Austin track and field team will be taking a large group of athletes to the University of Houston on Friday to compete in the Howie Ryan Invitational. The meet represents a final opportunity to evaluate which members of the team will be among the 28 men and 28 women that make the trip to Birmingham, Alabama on the 21st and 22nd.
The meet will kick off with the field events beginning at 11:00 a.m, followed by the start of track events at 1:00 p.m. and culminating with a 7:20 p.m. start time for the final event of the day.
"Individual goals equate to team goals, so everybody has a mark that they are shooting for this weekend, a goal in mind, something they are trying to do," said SFA head track and field coach Phil Olson. "It gives us a great opportunity to stay a little closer to home, have great competition and really push ourselves to the next level. I think everyone knows that we need to have a sense of urgency as we get close to championship week, we've got this meet, this weekend and then the next 7-9 days after that to get ready to go to Birmingham, and we need to be in a much better competitive form at that point."
Having relied on smaller even groups at some of the more recent meets, Friday's field will include a healthy number of SFA athletes, including some who are competing for just the first or second time this indoor season.
"We're going to take a group of about 80 athletes, and everyone is going to get a chance to compete, everyone is going to get a chance to show what they can do, and that will help us determine who we take to the championships," added Olson.
The field at the event comprises of regional schools from the Southland, Conference USA, SWAC, WAC and American Conferences. Southland schools that will be competing at the event include Houston Baptist, Central Arkansas, Sam Houston State, Incarnate Word and Lamar.
