
SFA Men Place Second, Women Third at 2018 Southland Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Stephen F. Austin track and field team put forth numerous strong performances on the second and final day of the Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, leading the men to a runners-up finish and the women, a third place finish. The 'Jacks saw numerous performers finish in the top eight on the day to score points for the team, including several top-three finishes, and two event wins.
Hunter Key and Tanner Parks got SFA off to a strong start for the second day in a row, as the duo finished second and fifth, respectively, in the heptathlon after completing the remaining three events. Both men hits new personal bests in score, as Key finished with 5238 points and Parks notched 4844. Daniel Rosado (14, 4172), Bradley Beatty (18th, 3756) and Tyji Yulee (19th, 3672) also wrapped up competition in the event.
Next up for SFA was a second place finish in the mile run for Kelsey Ramirez at 4:57.17. The freshman shattered her previous PR in the event by eight seconds and scored eight points for her team with the superb finish. Running in the men's mile was Titus Kiplagat, who nabbed an eighth place finish to score for SFA with a time of 4:19.95. Wrapping up the distance events was the 3000m, where Brittany Innis finished sixth in the race with a time of 10:00.71, and teammate Samantha Ottman posting a time of 10:08.15 to finish eighth and score for SFA.
In the middle distance, SFA was able to make up some points on both the men's and women's side with a handful of top-five performances. LaSean Davis notched a third place finish with a PR of 2:13.01, scoring six points. Teammate Madison Compass also scored in the race, coming in at 2:17.80 to nab seventh place and two points. Drake Murphy ran to a fifth place finish in a very competitive 800m heat, scoring four points and notching a time of 1:52.80.
Tedrick Hawkins and Kerry Gleason cruised to second and third place, respectively, in the 400m dash to secure 14 points for the Lumberjacks. Hawkins set a new PR with 48.18 on the way to finishing second in the event for the second season in a row, while Gleason notched a time of 48.63 to match his PR. Aaron Piper placed seventh in the 200m dash with a time of 21.79. In the women's 400m finals, Dominique Jackson (57.07) and Tiffany Williams (57.16) both scored for SFA with a seventh and eighth place finish, respectively.
In the 60m high hurdles, Gleason nabbed the fourth place spot with a time of 8.09 to score five points for SFA, while teammate Jordan Washington placed sixth with a time of 8.15. Running in the finals of the 60m dash, Piper hit a mark of 6.87 to finish sixth overall and score three points. For the women's sprinters, Imani Nave raced to a fourth place finish in the 200m dash with a time of 24.39, while Dominique Jackson finished seventh in the 60m hurdles with a mark of 8.82.
The Ladyjacks pulled a coup in the pole vault, as Kaylee Bizzell won the event with a personal best of 4.02m (13.02.25") and Carson Dingler took third with a mark of 3.92m (12'-10.25"). The win was SFA's second of the meet, with the other also coming courtesy of an SFA pole vaulter in the form of Antonio Ruiz on Wednesday.
In the women's triple jump, Kariyah Lanehart placed seventh with a mark of 11.75m (38'-6.75")to score two points for the Ladyjacks. Teammate Kadejah Wilson notched a fourth place finish in the high jump with a height of 1.72m (5'-07.75"), an indoor PR for the junior.
Representing the throwers on the day was Trenton Bridges, who placed fourth in the men's weight throw with a mark of 17.83m (58'-6.00") to match his PR. Teammate Ben Bibby just missed the out on a top-eight finish, notching a distance of 54'-11.50" to finish in ninth place.
The 4x400 relay to close out the meet had no shortage of thrills, as the Ladyjacks relay of Imani Nave, Dominique Jackson, Tiffany Williams and Aaliyah Teel ran a tight race with the relay teams from Northwestern State and Sam Houston State on the way to a second place finish with a time of 3:45.01. In the men's race, SFA fended off the team from Abilene Christian, as Tedrick Hawkins pulled away in the anchor leg to help the Lumberjacks seize first place. Kerry Gleason, Charles Fentress and Drake Murphy ran the other legs of the relay, as the team finished at 3:14.39.
