
Ladyjacks Finish Third; Lumberjacks Take Fourth at 2018 Southland Cross Country Championships

Four 'Jacks notch Top-10 finishes at conference meet

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The men and women of the Stephen F. Austin cross country team slogged through wet and muddy conditions to improve on last year's placement at the 2018 Southland Cross Country Championship on Friday. The Ladyjacks finished in third place with a total of 74 points, while the men ranked fourth with a total of 102 points.
A total of four SFA runners placed within the top ten and thus were named to the Southland All-Conference Teams. Titus Kiplagat was the fourth overall finisher in the men's 8K race and was awarded First Team honors as well as being named Freshman of the Year on the men's side. Awet Beraki finished sixth overall and was chosen to the Second Team. Taryn Surratt finished fifth in the women's race to be selected to the First Team, while Claire Crone took home Second Team honors for her ninth-place finish.
The muddy ground and overall saturation of the course was an obstacle that every runner in the field had to deal with. Taryn Surratt led the Ladyjacks with a time of 23:12, while Crone finished in 23:43.2. Kelsey Ramirez just missed Second Team honors with an 11thplace finish and a time of 23:51.7. Elizabeth Guerra finished fourth for the Ladyjacks with a time of 24:15.5 in 22ndplace, followed by Carolyn Evans in 27that 24:35.6. Alexis Antkowiak finished in 46thwith a time of 25:53.2 in her first Southland Conference meet, while LaSean Davis rounded out the women's side with a finish of 26:25.0.
On the men's side, Kiplagat's top-five finish came as a result of a time of 26:45.2, while Beraki posted a time of 26:56.0. Erick Rotich finished third out of the Lumberjacks with a mark of 27:47.3 and a 17thplace finish. Grant Tiff placed 32ndin the field in his first conference race, coming in at 28:24.1. Pedro Flores claimed the fifth spot for SFA with a mark of 28:51.9, while Chris Shirk (30:59.8) and Max Murphy (31:15.6) rounded out the Lumberjacks roster.
Next up for SFA is the NCAA South Central regional meet on November 9 in College Station, Texas.
