NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin softball team is set to host University of Houston for their last midweek game of the 2017 season, presented by Tipton Ford. The game at the SFA Softball Field on Tuesday will mark the start of a seven-game home stand for the Ladyjacks. First pitch for the game is set for 5:00 p.m.
Last weekend, the Ladyjacks dropped a 2-1 series to Central Arkansas. After a rough start with the double-header on Friday, SFA regrouped and blew away the Bears in the third game, 5-2, in eight innings. The RBI in the series were scored by senior Brittany Lewis, junior Autumn Holloway, freshman Kiriany Hornberger, sophomore Lauren Becker, freshman Katie Clark, and junior Taylor Fraccastoro. The Ladyjacks were the first on the offensive attack in all three games in Conway, but they could not hold off the Bears late in the game one and game two of the series. Junior pitcher Callee Guffey went 1-1 on the weekend, taking the first loss and winning the third game. She is now 7-8 on the season. Pitching a total of 14.2 innings, she scattered 18 hits, four runs, and struck out 12.
In Southland Conference standings, Lewis still sits with the seventh best batting average in the league (.339). Junior Amber Landry ranks in at 14th with a .321 batting average. After racking another double from the weekend, Lewis is third ranked for nine batted doubles, while sophomore Emily Wolfe is tied at fourth with eight doubles. Pitcher Guffey falls to second in the league for earned run average after the 4-3 loss to UCA, but still holds a .42 over the third place pitcher. She is ranked ninth in the Southland for total strike outs this season (72).
Since the 2016 game for SFA and UH was rained out, the last time these two teams played was in the 2015 Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational. The Ladyjacks tabbed a 5-1 win over the Cougars. After trailing 1-0 in the seventh, SFA posted a five-run frame for the win.
Scouting Houston: The University of Houston Softball set the American Athletic Conference record with 22 runs scored in a 22-0, five inning batting camp, over UConn. The Cougars swept the series against the Huskies, with almost every batter either tallying a hit or scoring a run. Leftfielder Maya Thomas and first baseman Shelby Miller made the most damage in that game with both going 3-for-3 with three runs each.
Next Up: SFA continues will Southland Conference action on Thursday and Friday, April 13 and 14, against Houston Baptist. The Huskies will come into town on Thursday for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m., and then a single game will follow on 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
