Each of SFA's newest signees comes from the state of Texas
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin baseball coach Johnny Cardenas announced Thursday the signing of nine players during the 2018 early signing period. Each of the 'Jacks' nine signees will be able to don an SFA uniform beginning in the 2019 season.
John Dominguez | RHP | 5-10 | Leander, Texas | Rouse HS
With a fastball that tops out in the lower 90s, Dominguez has a chance to become an impact pitcher for the 'Jacks in the years to come. Also included in his three-pitch arsenal is a sharp breaking ball and an emerging change-up. Currently, Dominguez is entering his senior sesaon at Rouse High School.
Trey Erwin | C | 6-1 | Edgewood, Texas | Edgewood HS
A three-sport athlete (football, basketball and baseball) at Edgewood High School, Erwin's gap-to-gap hitting ability is one of the best weapons in his baseball arsenal. Erwin's versatility any physical nature give him the potential to contribute on the field in multiple ways.
Cole Lightfoot | INF | 5-10 | Weatherford, Texas | Brock HS
Looking to build on a junior year for Brock High School in which he hit .402, drove in 37 runs and finished with 10 extra-base hits. The team's starting shortstop in each game, Lightfoot scored 30 runs of his own and stole 21 bases en route to being named District 7-3A Player of the Year. In addition to his player of the year honor, Lightfoot earned a spot on the THSBCA All-State Team and the All-Parker County team. His select baseball teams included Dave Acton and the Arlington A's and he was twice named to the North Texas Scout League All-Star Team and the Perfect Game Wood Bat Championships All-Tournament Team.
Cully Mangus | RHP | 6-3 | Mont Belvieu, Texas | Barbers Hill HS
A pitcher by trade, Mangus has shown a high-level ability to be a threat at the plate as well during his pre-collegiate stint at Barbers Hill High School. Mangus has accumulated a trio of varsity letters for Barbers Hill as he heads into his senior season in 2018 and has twice been chosen as an Academic All-District honoree. With a pitching arsenal that runs as high as 92 miles per hour, Mangus was named an All-District performer at first base.
Jordan Monacy | 1B | 6-5 | Magnolia, Texas | Temple College
Once Monacy arrives at Stephen F. Austin for the 2018-19 academic year, it will represent the third collegiate stop of his career. As a freshman in 2017, Monacy wore University of Houston colors and appeared in 28 games with 14 starts for the Cougars. During the 2018 season, Monacy will play for Temple College, bringing a strong defensive presence at first base as well as the ability to drive the ball out to all parts of the field.
Alex Palmer | RHP | 5-10 | Mansfield, Texas | Cisco College
By teaming with fellow 2018 SFA signee Joseph Sgambelluri, Alex Palmer gave Cisco College a powerful one-two pitching punch throughout the Wranglers' 2017 campaign. That is expected to continue in 2018 as the squad retains the services of Palmer who tossed 70.1 frames and struck out 101 batters in that span. Palmer's record settled at 7-5 and the right-hander finished the season with a 3.58 ERA as well as a strikeouts per nine innings average of 12.92. With a repertoire that includes an overpowering fastball as well as a change-up, it's expected that Palmer will make an immediate impact on SFA's pitching staff.
Joseph Sgambelluri | RHP | 6-2 | Benbrook, Texas | Cisco College
A junior college teammate of Alex Palmer at Cisco College, Sgambelluri worked his way through 46.1 innings of work for the Wranglers in 2017 and produced a 3-1 record to show for his efforts. Though his ERA stood at 4.66 during that season, it was the right-handers ability to fan opposing batters that impressed the most. Sgambelluri finished the season with 54 strikeouts - good for a strikeouts per nine innings rate of 10.49. In his pitching arsenal are both the fastball and a late-breaking slide piece, giving Sgambelluri the potential to come in and challenge for a start in SFA's regular rotation.
Brandon Uhse | OF | 6-2 | Grand Prairie, Texas | Lake Ridge HS
The list of accolades racked up for Uhse through three years of pre-collegiate work at Lake Ridge High School is rather impressive. Heading into his senior season, the outfielder has been named an Under Armour Preseason All-American after appearing at the Under Armour All-America Preseason Tournament last spring. As a junior Uhse claimed the title of District Offensive Player of the Year after being named District Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore. A gap-to-gap hitter with a strong arm defensively, Uhse has the ability to send hits to all areas of the field.
Casen White | OF | 5-11 | Cypress, Texas | Cy-Fair HS
The latest in a long line of Houston area products, White will enter his senior year at Cy-Fair High School in 2018 and serve as one of the top bats in the squad's lineup. White's big swing allows him the ability to drive the ball out of any ballpark and is a solid defender.
