SFA has now beaten the Cardinals in four straight contests
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – A promising matchup against the Southland's weakest defensive team bore fruit on Friday in the form of a season-high four goals for the Stephen F. Austin women's soccer team, as they routed Incarnate Word 4-0 on the road. The win was the fourth straight for SFA (10-6, 7-2 SLC), and represents the team's biggest single-game scoring output of the season.
SFA's start against the lowly Cardinals (2-12, 1-8 SLC) wasn't a promising one, but the team shook off a lethargic start to the contest and opened the floodgates in the 32nd minute of play, as Hanna Barker netted a breakaway goal for her eighth strike of the season and fourth game-winning tally of the campaign. It wouldn't get much better for the Cardinals, as the team's offense came through in spectacular fashion.
Not content to rest on their laurels after the opening score, the Ladyjacks came through in the 39 minute, as freshman Destiny Davis checked into the game and immediately drove down the left side of the field with the ball. Her cross was deflected out of bounds by UIW, setting up a corner kick for SFA. The resulting service from Bailey Bosley floated to center back Kennedy Rose, who rose above her mark and directed a header over the Cardinal goalkeeper and into the far side of goal to double the lead. The goal was the second of the campaign for Rose, who netted a goal against McNeese in similar fashion a few weeks ago.
Playing well and owning a substantial two-goal lead, the Ladyjacks kept up the pressure even into the waning moments of the first half, as a corner kick in the 44th minute turned into the Ladyjacks third goal of the contest. The service in by Carli Arthurs first came to Lauren Hall, who wasn't quite able to loose a shot at goal, but kept the ball alive for senior Chloe Fowler to come in and net her first career goal on a short strike from inside the box.
Carrying a 3-0 lead into the halftime break, and without having yielded a shot on goal to UIW, the Ladyjacks were able to bring fresh legs into the game in the second half, resulting in the team's fourth goal of the evening. Freshman Sabrina Segovia received a through ball from Michaela Mencacci and direct a shot which got past the charging UIW goalkeeper and slowly bounced into the goal for Segovia's second goal in as many games.
"Incarnate Word has a tough environment to play in and I wasn't thrilled with the first 25 minutes or so of play", said SFA head coach Wally Crittenden. "A lot of that has to do with Incarnate Word, as they came out with great energy and commitment. We shifted our shape and once we settled in, we began to connect more and impose ourselves in the run of play. The 4th goal in the second half was a good, solid goal built out of possession and then a trememndous creative finish. All in all, I am very pleased with the level of play over 60-65 minutes and the overall quality of play as we showcased out depth today in a challenging road environment."
That margin would hold for the game, as the Ladyjacks would come close to scoring on later chances, but weren't able to convert to add to the margin. The defense was great for SFA, as the Cardinals managed just seven shots in the contest, and just one on goal, saved by SFA goalkeeper Allyson Smith.
The 'Jacks notched a season-high 13 points as team in the victory, with nine different players accounting for those points.
More information on the game, as well as quotes from head coach Wally Crittenden, will be available later this evening.
