ABILENE, Texas – Just two days after putting together its highest scoring output of the season, the Stephen F. Austin women's soccer team came out flat in Sunday's match with Abilene Christian and fell by a 2-0 score. The inopportune loss pushes SFA two full games back of Southland leader Lamar in the standings, and snaps a season-high four-game win streak.
Abilene Christian (7-10, 5-5 SLC) came out of the gate particularly aggressive on Senior Day and never let up, keeping the pressure on SFA (10-7, 7-3 SLC) all day long with a barrage of 18 shots (eight on goal). The win was the first for ACU in the all-time series, having been bested by the Ladyjacks in all four previous matchups.
"Really tough result today', said SFA head coach Wally Crittenden. "Abilene Christian challenged us physically and individually and got the better of us. It is the first game in a long where as a group have been disappointed with our competitive spirit and energy. Knowing this team though, they will respond. I have no doubt we will be better equipped to manage this type of adversity moving forward as we look toward Sam Houston State on Friday and the SLC Tourney thereafter."
After the teams battled to a scoreless first half despite a dominant edge for ACU in total shots, ACU would open the scoring with a strike in the 59th minute of play, as leading-scorer Dylan Owens got on the end of a service into the goal box from the left side of the field. Her header beat Ladyjacks goalkeeper Allyson Smith for what would be the game-winner from about six yards out.
In the 71st minute, the Wildcats would double their lead with a strike from distance, as Chloe Fifer corralled a loose ball and fired off a powerful strike into the far side of the net to beat a leaping Smith. For the game, Smith made six saves across the 90 minute period while allowing the two goals.
SFA managed three shots on goal in the loss, with Mari Gillespie, Carli Arthurs and Chloe Fowler each notching an attempt.
With the loss, as well as a loss by McNeese and a win by Lamar on Sunday, SFA remains in third place in the conference standings with one game remaining in the regular season. Central Arkansas could move into a tie for third with SFA pending the results of Sunday's match with Southeastern Louisiana.
