NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin softball team will look to rebound from a tough trip to Florida last week when it heads to Oxford, Mississippi for the Ole Miss Classic this Friday – Sunday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. The Ladyjacks will play five games over the weekend against UT-San Antonio, Northern Iowa and Ole Miss.
SFA opens tournament play on Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. against UTSA before taking on Ole Miss at 6:30 p.m. on the ESPN3 platform that evening. The ‘Jacks will start day two with UNI at 11:00 a.m. to conclude round robin action.
After every team has played the others once, each squad will be seeded No. 1-4 based on results. The top seed will play the fourth while the middle two teams go at it on Saturday evening. The two winners will fight for the tournament championship on Sunday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. with the consolation game set for 10:00 a.m.
Following its third tournament of the season, SFA will get ready for its home opener against Texas Southern on Tuesday, March 1 at 3:00 p.m. out at the SFA Softball Field. Originally scheduled for Feb. 24, wet playing conditions postponed the contest to the first of the month.
The Ladyjacks were able to take a lot of positives away from their recent six-game road trip to Florida last week. Despite going 0-6 on the journey, SFA was able to get good competition against four teams ranked in the top 25. The ‘Jacks jumped out in front 2-0 on No. 1 Florida on Friday – becoming the first team to take a lead on the two-time defending national champions in 2016.
Senior outfielders Lindsay Campbell and Alisa Hamilton, juniors Brittany Lewis and Courtney Chambers and sophomore catcher Taylor Fraccastoro have been constant fixtures in the SFA lineup so far this year, starting all 10 games for the ‘Jacks. Campbell currently leads the team with a .310 batting average, followed by Fraccastoro with a .292 mark. Chambers has touched home a team best seven times on the season while Lewis paces the squad with eight RBI.
Senior hurler Hannah Welch has been the Ladyjacks’ top performer in the circle through 10 games, posting a 3.29 ERA over 13.2 innings. Sophomore Makayla Sikes has fanned the most batters with 13 strikeouts in 16.0 innings.
Live stats will be available for each game this weekend through the Tournament Central link above. SFA’s game against Ole Miss will also be broadcast live on the SEC Network+ and ESPN3.
