FRISCO, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin senior first baseman Dan O'Neill has been named a first team Southland Conference All-Academic team selection, announced today by the league office.
The all-conference honors for O'Neill comes on the heels of being named to a first team Capital One Academic All-District VII selection as the Ridley, Pennsylvania native boats a 3.86 GPA majoring in kinesiology -- the second-highest among the 12-man All-SLC first team.
O'Neill was a constant at first base for the Lumberjacks for the last two seasons, starting 49 of his 50 games played in 2015. He batted .262 on the year and ranked among the Lumberjack leaders in a number of categories, including sitting second on the team in doubles (nine), home runs (four) and total bases (70). He also finished fourth on the `Jacks in both runs scored (25) and hits (49).
For his career, O'Neill played in 89 games for SFA with 64 starts, batting .271 with 64 hits, 30 RBI, 14 doubles and three home runs. He has also been one of the most consistent defensive players on the diamond for the `Jacks, recording just nine errors and posting a .983 fielding percentage in his two years in Nacogdoches.
O'Neill becomes the fourth Lumberjack to be named a first team SLC All-Academic selection, joining Erich Lehmann (2009), Jarid Scarafiotti (2010, 2011, 2012) and Hunter Dozier (2013). O'Neill now becomes the 15th Academic All-SLC selection since the program was reinstated in 2006.
The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each Southland University. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
