Records: SFA (7-20), PVAMU (2-10)
Opening Pitch
The Stephen F. Austin softball team travels to Prairie View on Wednesday for a midweek, non-conference game against the Lady Panthers of Prairie View A&M. The meeting is the first between the two schools this season as the first game of the season series on March 5 in Nacogdoches was postponed due to rain. First pitch on Wednesday is set for 3:00 p.m.
Last Time Out
The Ladyjacks are coming off two tough home Southland Conference losses this past weekend against Southeastern Louisiana. In the first game last Friday morning, SFA was in the thick of things until the Lady Lions scored six runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach, 11-2. The Ladyjacks then lost a heartbreaker in game two, rallying from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game at 3-3 before falling 5-3 in eight innings. SFA managed just four hits in each game to fall to 1-7 in SLC action.
Offensive Woes
The Ladyjacks have been in a slump at the plate over the last two weeks as the team batting average has dropped to a season-low .207. The mark is the worst in the league by 31 points. Runs have been hard to come by as a result of the low production. SFA has scored just five runs in the last five games overall.
Finding Her Groove
Freshman pitcher Callee Guffey has been a bright spot for the Ladyjacks this season. After posting a 2.50 ERA in three appearances last week to go along with 20 strikeouts in 14.0 innings pitched, Guffey now ranks 10th in the league with an overall ERA of 3.97. She currently sits third in the SLC with 61 strikeouts, averaging 5.77 per game.
Slapping For Average
Junior outfielder Alisa Hamilton is coming off a nice week offensively. The slapper recorded four hits in 13 at-bats for a .308 batting average over the team's five games during the week. She was the only Ladyjack to bat over the .300 clip in the span, starting all five contests. Hamilton now owns a .221 average on the year.
Losing Skid
The Ladyjacks are currently on a 10-game losing streak - the longest of the season. Five of those games have been decided by two runs or less while three of the contests went to extra innings.
Looking at the Lady Panthers
Prairie View A&M comes into Wednesday's game with an overall record of 2-10 and a 1-1 mark at home. The Lady Panthers lost their first two games of the season to SLC foe Abilene Christian. All four of their scheduled games against Houston Baptist have been postponed. Despite starting the season 0-9, PVAMU has won two of its last three games, most recently beating Jackson State 10-2 on Monday.
Looking Ahead
The Ladyjacks will get back to their conference slate this weekend against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Corpus Christi. The Ladyjacks will battle the Islanders on Friday at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. while wrapping up the three-game set on Saturday afternoon at noon.
