NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin softball team is set for the 2015 home opener, which will be played on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at SFA Softball Field against Texas Southern. After tournaments at Baylor and at Houston, the Ladyjacks currently sit at 4-6 on the season heading into Wednesday's contest.
The Lady Tigers come into the game with a 1-5 record overall, most recently coming off a win against Southland Conference member Houston Baptist on Feb. 11. The 6-1 victory over the Huskies marks the lone win for TSU on the year after dropping all five games played at the North Texas Invitational from Feb. 6-8 in Denton, Texas.
The Ladyjacks have had a flair for the dramatic early in the 2015 season, winning extra-inning games against SLC foes Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and McNeese State while using a seventh inning rally to defeat Houston on Sunday. Against some quality opponents at each of the first two tournaments of the year, SFA has been in every ballgame. The last five losses have all been by three runs or fewer.
Brittany Lewis has paced the Ladyjack offense over the first 10 games. The sophomore is averaging .429 (12-for-28) with four runs, two home runs and a team-high seven RBI. Freshman Taylor Fraccastoro has also displayed quality hitting and power early in the year, batting .273 with a team-high seven runs, two long balls and five RBI.
Freshman Makayla Sikes leads the Ladyjacks inside the circle in terms of ERA after four starts. Her 3.86 ERA has come in 23.1 innings pitched. Fellow teammate and freshman Callee Guffey has also been a great threat on the rubber for SFA. She leads the squad with 23 strikeouts on the year.
Wednesday's game is the only home contest for the Ladyjacks in February. Fans can follow all of the action via Twitter (@SFA_Softball).
