NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin softball team will look to carry their momentum built with a runner-up finish at the Getterman Classic (Baylor) last weekend when they head south for the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational on Friday through Sunday.
The Ladyjacks (2-3) will open play on Friday with an 11:30 a.m. game against DePaul (1-4) before playing the University of Massachusetts (0-0) at 3:30 p.m. On Saturday, SFA will play back-to-back games against Southland Conference foe McNeese State (3-2) and the University of Northern Iowa (3-3) starting at 9:00 a.m. Sunday features a contest against host Houston (3-4) at 2:00 p.m. to close out the tournament.
Last year, SFA went 3-2 in the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational, with two wins over Army and a 1-0 victory over Nebraska. The Ladyjacks’ two losses were to Sam Houston State and Houston.
SFA got the season started on the right foot last weekend in Waco, getting a lot of big performances from newcomers and veterans alike to finish second behind No. 10 Baylor in the 2015 Getterman Classic. The Ladyjacks won the season opener in dramatic fashion as sophomore Brittany Lewis hit a three-run home run in extra innings to propel SFA to a thrilling 6-3 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
A trio of freshmen led the Ladyjacks to a victory over Wichita State in the semifinals on Saturday. Taylor Fraccastoro and Autumn Holloway each came up with big hits and Callee Guffey had a nice outing in the circle to pick up her first collegiate winning decision.
After a tough loss to the 10th ranked Lady Bears in the championship game on Sunday, three Ladyjacks were named to the 2015 Getterman Classic All-Tournament Team. Lewis, Fraccastoro and junior outfielder Lindsay Campbell each got the nod thanks to big performances all weekend long.
This Friday against DePaul and UMass, expect to see Guffey (1-1, 6.43 ERA) and fellow freshman Makayla Sikes (0-2, 2.08 ERA) in the circle for the Ladyjacks.
