AUSTIN, Texas - Senior defender Megan Dunnigan recorded the first multi-goal match of her career, as the Stephen F. Austin women's soccer team blanked Nevada 3-0 on Friday evening at Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field on the University of Texas campus.
The Ladyjacks (2-1-0) got goals from freshman Hanna Barker (2) and Dunnigan (2) in a match that was delayed over two hours due to lightning late in the first period.
"Really pleased with our attitude and competitive spirit tonight," head coach Wally Crittenden said. "We were really good in the first half prior to the two hour break, especially with our possession and tempo of play. After the delay, Nevada came out really hard and began to press us and demand a more physical response. Our kids maintained their edge and Megan Dunnigan scored a great goal.
"Tonight, we were able to move some players around and continue to evaluate some different looks, which is always good. Now, we will begin our recovery and start preparing for a great challenge on Sunday against a ranked Arkansas team that I think we match up really well against."
Senior Morgan Glick improved to 2-1-0 on the season, making three saves across the full 90 minutes in the net, as the defense turned in another lockdown showing. SFA limited the Wolf Pack (0-2-1) to eight shots and just three on goal, while the Ladyjacks attempted 15, landing seven on goal, also leading 4-2 on corner kicks.
Barker scored what proved to be game-winning goal in the 12th minute, her second of the season, driving through two defenders in the box to create space.
Dunnigan followed with a goal of her own, her first of the season, on a put back in the 29th minute, as junior Rachel Owens picked up the assist.
Up 2-0, the match was halted after lightning struck in the area with 6:46 left in the opening period. After the delay, the two teams played a quiet last few minutes, as SFA entered the break on top.
Due to the delay, halftime was reduced to just four minutes, but the short rest proved to be all that was need for a quick strike out of the gate. Dunnigan headed in a corner kick from senior Zuri Prince just 49 seconds in to push the Ladyjacks' lead to three goals. With the assist, Prince moved into a three-way tie for third place all-time with 15 in her career, breaking her tie with Lauren Fricks (14, 2006-08) at fifth.
SFA will now enjoy a day in the capital, before meeting with No. 25 Arkansas on Sunday in an 11:06 a.m. match aired on Longhorn Network.
