NACOGDOCHES, Texas - After getting out to a 1-5 start in Southland Conference action, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks will host UT Arlington in a critical early-season conference series this Friday (4:30 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m.).
The Ladyjacks (8-20, 1-5) are coming off a pair of 5-2 losses at Sam Houston State on Tuesday when they struggled defensively, committing six combined errors.
Carlie Thomas and Angela White lead a rotation that has a collective ERA of 4.36 but have not yet received the type of run support needed to overcome a combined 8-17 overall record. White was pitching a solid second game against Sam Houston State on Tuesday before allowing four unearned runs in the fourth inning.
The Mavericks, who have lost 11 of their past 13 games overall, lead the all-time series against SFA 60-44 with UTA winning the last six of the two team's seven meetings. UTA has scored the same amount of runs as SFA (78), but have had one of the top pitching staffs in the conference thus far.
Junior Teri Lyles and sophomore Callie Collins spearhead a staff that has a 2.75 ERA (4th), .247 opponents batting average (4th), and only 80 runs allowed (2nd). Offensively the Mavs are led by sophomore outfielder Stephanie Gonzalez (.291 avg., 4 HR, 10 RBI) and senior catcher Erica LeFlore (.296 avg., 3 HR, 12 RBI).
Following this weekend's series, the Ladyjacks will make up a doubleheader at Baylor on Tuesday, April 3 starting at 3 p.m.
