NACOGDOCHES, Texas - For the second straight match the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks rallied from an early deficit for a win, doing so with a 3-1 (18-25, 25-18, 25-13, 25-21) victory over Lamar on Saturday at Shelton Gym.
Middle blockers Jacque Allen and Sabrina Burns combined for 25 kills and 10 blocks as the Ladyjacks (17-8, 8-4 SLC) closed out the season sweep of the Cardinals (9-17, 1-11 SLC) who were led by Sierra Whittaker's 10 kills.
SFA hit just .180 for the match and had 11 blocks as a team, compared to just .100 hitting and six blocks for the Cardinals. Allen's 15 kills were the most by any Ladyjack on the night and set a new career high for the redshirt freshman who swung .500 on 24 swings. Paige Holland had 39 assists and 12 digs for a double-double, while Madison Hanlan had 15 digs and Tori Bates added nine kills and 11 digs.
The Ladyjacks were on both ends of the spectrum before the half, allowing the Cardinals to hit .333 in the first set and falling behind 1-0 despite six kills on seven swings from Jacque Allen. One set later SFA evened things up when it allowed just three Cardinal kills in Set 2 and rolled to a seven-point win with four kills from Keeley Kainer and three from Burns.
SFA opened up the third set on an 11-0 run and hit a match-best .242 with 13 kills, never trailing and rolling to its most lopsided set of the match; however, the fourth set was much more difficult as the Cards got out to a quick 5-0 start themselves before sFA managed to draw even. Things were all knotted up at 20-20 late in the set, but after Lamar got the benefit of an SFA service error, a kill from Kainer was followed by four more Ladyjack points to close out the match, including three scores from Bates.
SFA will next try and seek revenge for an upset loss to Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday when it takes on the Lions in Hammond, La., at the University Center before traveling to Thibodaux, La., to take on Nicholls.
