HAMMOND, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks hit a season-low .034 and despite rallying to force a deciding fifth set, fell to Southeastern Louisiana 3-2 (25-15, 21-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-9) on Thursday at the University Center.
SFA (17-9, 8-5 SLC) was looking for revenge against the Lions (10-14, 5-9 SLC) who picked up a five-set win in Nacogdoches just two sets earlier, but instead the Lions managed to convert 16 blocks and earned their first-ever season sweep of the Ladyjacks.
Jill Ivy led SFA with 12 kills, but only Tori Bates was able to join her in double figures with 10 scores. Katzy Randall just missed a double-double with nine kills and 18 digs, while Madison Hanlan and Janet Hill each reached double figures in digs with 25 and 11 apiece, respectively. Sabrina Burns and Jacque Allen had five blocks apiece, while Paige Holland had 38 assists.
The Ladyjacks mustered just three kills in the first set, hitting -.176 as the Lions took control early and cruised to a 10-point win. One set later the Ladyjacks rebounded to knot it up, getting 14 kills, six of which came from Ivy and scored the final five points of the frame to square the match at one set apiece.
But the offensive woes returned in the third set when the Lions were able to sneak away with a win despite hitting just .167 themselves due to -.029 hitting from SFA; however, it was an 12-3 run that turned a 14-10 SFA lead into a a 22-17 advantage for Southeastern, which was enough of a gap to hang on to push the match lead to 2-1.
SFA responded in the fourth set with a four-point win to push the match to a deciding fifth set, but Southeastern came out quick in the deciding frame, getting in front 8-3 and allowed just three Ladyjack kills in winning the race to 15 to close out the match.
The Ladyjacks will try and salvage the road trip on Saturday when they take on Nicholls in Thibodaux in the final home match of the season for the Colonels.
