SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack tennis team entered the 2011 Southland Conference Championships looking to accomplish something they haven't done since the 2000 season, advance to the tournament semifinals. The Ladyjacks appeared on the verge of accomplishing another feat in a season of firsts under first-year head coach Patrick Sullivan, but were denied in heartbreaking one-point setback to Texas State.
The Bobcats survived the match with a 4-3 victory over SFA, and will advance to face regular-season champion Texas-Arlington Saturday afternoon. The Ladyjacks end their season with a 20-5 (.800) overall mark, setting a program record for wins and winning percentage.
"I couldn't be more proud of this team," said head coach Patrick Sullivan. "They really fought hard here tonight, and gave everything they had for SFA. Unfortunately, we came up just a little bit short, but you have to give credit to Texas State. They are a talented team, and played well here tonight.
"I have asked a lot of my team this season. We were in a unique situation being forced to go with our iron six all year. That can really wear on you after a while, but these girls never quit fighting and I'm proud of their performance," added Sullivan.
After dropping the doubles point, and falling behind early, 3-1, in singles play, the Ladyjacks had their backs against the wall but senior Meaghan Ocanas and sophomore Paola Montuenga picked up singles wins at Nos. 6 and 2 singles, respectively, to tie the match, 3-3.
The deciding point came down to No. 1 singles, which was forced to a third set. Junior Alina Shazhko jumped out to an early lead the final set, but was unable to hold the advantage as the Bobcats picked up the point and the victory.
