NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin softball team will open its season-ending six-game home stand this weekend with a three-game Southland Conference series against Central Arkansas. The set begins Saturday with a doubleheader at SFA Field. First pitch against the Bears is set for 1 p.m.
SFA comes into the series with a 12-32 season mark, having gone 4-4 over its last eight games. The Ladyjacks are 7-17 in Southland play. SFA was scheduled to play a doubleheader at North Texas on Wednesday, but the games were canceled due to inclement weather and wet field conditions.
The Ladyjacks have gotten strong performances from a pair of freshmen over the last several games. Pitcher Carlie Thomas has posted complete-game shutouts in two of her last three starts, and classmate Cadie Weaver is batting .467 over her last five games. The third baseman had two hits in each of SFA's three games at Southeastern Louisiana last weekend -- including two doubles and a home run -- and drove in four runs in the series.
Central Arkansas brings a 22-28 season mark and an 8-16 league record to the weekend. The Bears are 2-5 in their last seven contests with the only Southland victory in that stretch being a 3-2 win in the series opener at Northwestern State.
Central Arkansas has the third-best batting average in the Southland at .278. The Bears' 32 home runs rank second in the league. The UCA pitching staff has a 2.76 ERA.
