FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin senior pitcher Monika Covington was named Monday the Southland Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week, according to an announcement by league officials. Covington is the first Ladyjack this season to earn a league player of the week award.
Covington went 2-0 over the weekend in a pair of starts at Northwestern State. She allowed only one earned run in 17 innings of work to post a 0.53 ERA for the week. Covington took a shutout through 10 innings in the series opener before leaving with a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 11th. In Sunday's finale, she worked seven full innings, holding the Demons to one unearned run on three hits in a 4-1 victory. Covington recorded 18 strikeouts for the weekend, including 10 in the final game, her fourth double-figure strikeout performance of the season.
The Huffman, Texas, native ranks third in the Southland with 110 strikeouts on the year. Earlier this season, she became the SFA career leader in strikeouts, passing Pam Clay with her 736th punchout. Covington currently has 805 career strikeouts.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action Wednesday, when they travel to Monroe, La., to take on ULM. The game against the Warhawks is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
