NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team will open a three-game Southland Conference series at Northwestern State Saturday with a doubleheader. The twin billing is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start with the series wrapping up Sunday with a single game.
SFA (6-20) comes into the series with a 2-7 record in Southland play. The Ladyjacks are coming off a 2-1 series loss to UTSA last weekend. All three games were one-run decisions, and SFA was outscored by a combined total of just 10-9 for the weekend. None of the Ladyjacks' last five losses have been by more than two runs.
SFA is still looking for its first true road win. The Demons (15-10) are 6-3 in home games and have a 3-3 mark in Southland play. Northwestern State has lost four in a row, the most recent defeat being a 4-2 extra-inning defeat against Louisiana Tech on Wednesday. Prior to their four-game skid, though, the Demons had won four straight and nine of their last 10.
Northwestern State bats .281 as a team, which ranks third in the league. The Demon pitching staff brings a 2.37 ERA to the weekend series, putting them second in the Southland. Demon pitchers have also recorded 174 strikeouts, the second-most in the league.
SFA comes into the weekend batting .216 for the year. Senior first baseman Lauren Luetge leads the team with her .305 average. Senior Monika Covington leads the Ladyjack pitching staff with a 4.34 ERA, and her 92 strikeouts are third in the Southland.
