NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin softball team will take on Houston Baptist on the road Wednesday in a mid-week clash. The Ladyjacks are scheduled to meet the Huskies at 2 p.m. from Husky Field in Houston.
The Ladyjacks (2-9) are coming off a week full of tough competition. SFA hosted then-No. 23 Texas A&M in a doubleheader on Wednesday, dropping a one-run decision and a 9-0 run-rule-shortened contest. Over the weekend, the Ladyjacks played five games in the Ragin' Cajun Invitational, hosted by No. 16 Louisiana-Lafayette. SFA lost, 7-0, to the Cajuns, but went 2-2 in the other four games, including wins against Maine and Tennessee State.
Freshman Elizabeth Arana batted .444 over the weekend with three runs scored and four RBI to lead the Ladyjacks. She was named to the all-tournament team, as was classmate Carlie Thomas, who went 2-0 in the circle with a 2.08 ERA. SFA finished as the tournament's runner-up.
Houston Baptist is coming off a solid series win at UTEP. The Huskies are 4-4 on the year with wins against UTEP, Sam Houston State and Army. HBU bats .329 as a team and has seven home runs on the young season. Led by Jammie Weidert's 1.59 ERA and 3-0 record, the Huskies pitching staff carries a 5.25 ERA and has held opposing bats to a .291 average.
SFA defeated HBU three times in 2010, winning twice in East Texas and once in Houston. The Ladyjacks took a 5-1 win in Houston in late February. Three weeks later, the teams played a doubleheader at Angelina College in Lufkin, with SFA winning the first game, 3-2, and the second, 2-0.
