NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Katzy Randall picked up her sixth double-double of the season and Sabrina Burns had a hand in five of SFA's eight blocks as the Ladyjacks swept UT-Arlington, 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-22) on Saturday at Shelton Gym.
Four Ladyjacks (11-12, 4-5 SLC) finished with at least seven kills in the match, but the SFA defense was also on point, holding UTA (7-15, 3-5 SLC) to just .101 hitting for the afternoon while both outdigging and outblocking the Mavs in the match and forcing three Mavs into negative attack percentages.
Randall finished with 13 kills and 11 digs, while Madison Hanlan finished with 17 digs for the match, moving into sixth all-time at SFA in that category. Meanwhile, SFA got eight kills from Jill Ivy and seven apiece from both Burns and Leslie Jackson to aide the offensive effort. The pair of Burns and Jackson had just three misfires on 35 swings between them.
At the net, Burns was joined by Randall with a match-high five blocks, while MC Bottles scored three blocks on the day. Setter Paige Holland had 30 assists on the day, directing the offense to a .182 attack percentage for the day.
For the Mavs, they were led by Tara Frantz and Amanda Aguilera with 13 and 10 kills apiece, respectively.
SFA had to overcome a slow start to the match, falling behind 5-1 early on before going on a 6-1 run of its own to grab its first lead of the day. Still, after the teams traded points for the majority of the set, it took a 5-0 run from SFA after the Mavs had taken a 21-20 lead late in the set to secure a 1-0 lead. Randall finished with five of her 13 kills in the first set as SFA managed to get the win, despite hitting just .153.
One set later SFA put together its best offensive frame of the match, hitting .206 and using an 8-2 run midway through the set to put a stranglehold on the frame, cruising to a 25-18 win to go into the locker room comfortably up 2-0.
The third frame mimicked much of the first set with SFA falling behind early on and trailing as late as at 15-11 before a kill from Burns stopped the UTA run. SFA then forced four more UTA attack errors to take a 16-15 lead, a lead it would not give back to the Mavs. UTA kept it close, as the teams traded points up to the 22-22 point of the set before SFA scored the final three points of the match, two of which came on kills from Ivy.
SFA has a pair of home matches next week, including its final non-conference match of the season on Wednesday when it hosts Houston Baptist. Two days later, SFA will host Nicholls in a 1:00 p.m. matinee.
