NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team will get back on the diamond Wednesday with a doubleheader at Houston Baptist. The first game against the Huskies is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
SFA comes into the mid-week set with a 3-6 record after winning three of its last four games. The Ladyjacks knocked off North Texas in the nightcap of a home doubleheader last week, then defeated Louisiana Tech and Alcorn State in the Southern Miss Mizuno Classic over the weekend. SFA dropped a 3-0 decision to Notre Dame on the tournament's final day, then had Tuesday's doubleheader at Texas A&M called off due to poor weather conditions.
The Ladyjacks had a team batting average of .114 after opening their season with four losses at the Mississippi State Bulldog Round-Robin, but last week's action brought that figure up to .206 for the year.
Sophomore shortstop Jessica Arana continues to lead the team with her .364 average and has a team-best four runs scored. Senior third baseman Briana Bishop is batting .333 and leads the squad in home runs (2) and runs batted in (6). She has 108 career RBI and needs just three more to become SFA's all-time leader.
In the circle, freshman Angela White has emerged as a dependable starter. She was the winning pitcher in all three of SFA's victories last week and posted a 1.95 ERA in 14.1 innings pitched. For the year, White is 3-2 with a 5.47 ERA. Junior Monika Covington (0-4) is yet to pick up her first victory of the year but leads SFA and ranks fourth in the Southland with 32 strikeouts.
Houston Baptist is 3-1 on the year and coming off a doubleheader sweep at Prairie View A&M last Friday. The Huskies are hitting .259 as a team but have outscored their opponents 26-9 for the season. HBU has yet to make an error through four games and carries a 2.77 team ERA into Wednesday's games.
Following the twin bill at Houston Baptist, the Ladyjacks will have the weekend off before opening Southland Conference play at home next Tuesday with the first contest of a three-game series against Sam Houston State.
