GAME INFORMATION
This Week: The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team will try to finish the regular season strong with home matches against two of the top five teams in the Southland Conference. SFA hosts Texas State on Friday, then plays UTSA Sunday in the regular season finale. The Ladyjacks come into the weekend with an 11-5-1 record that stands as the second-best overall mark in the Southland. SFA is 4-2-1 and tied for fourth in the league standings after two straight losses. The Bobcats share the No. 4 slot with SFA, sporting a 10-6-1 season mark and a 4-2-1 record in league play. UTSA is currently tied with Southeastern Louisiana atop the Southland leaderboard with a 5-1-1 record. The Roadrunners are 10-6-1 on the season.
Last Week: SFA was unable to capitalize on several scoring opportunities in a 2-1 loss at Sam Houston State. The Bearkats got a goal early in the first period and another just after halftime. SFA outshot Sam Houston, 20-8, and hit the post three times but couldn't find the net until Edwina Forbes put a goal in with under a minute to play. The defeat came on the heels of SFA's loss at Southeastern Louisiana, marking just the third time in the last seven seasons for the Ladyjacks to drop consecutive Southland Conference contests.
Series Histories: SFA is 6-10-2, all-time, against Texas State. The Ladyjacks have lost each of the last two meetings. SFA is 4-2-2 in home games against the Bobcats. Each of the last three games have been one-goal decisions. UTSA holds a 2-1-2 edge in the series with SFA that began in 2006. SFA's lone win against the Roadrunners was a 1-0 decision in the 2007 Southland Tournament. The teams played to a 1-1 draw last season.
The Bobcats: Texas State had a five-game unbeaten streak and had won eight of its last 10 going into last week's game against Southeastern Louisiana. The Lions took a 1-0 win in that contest, snuffing Texas State's chance to move into a first-place tie. The Bobcats have put up 29 goals as a team, led by Britney Curry's league-leading 12. Texas State ranks second in the Southland with 12 goals allowed.
The Roadrunners: UTSA opened Southland play by going 4-0-1 through its first five games. But the 'Runners dropped a 1-0 decision against Southeastern Louisiana last weekend. UTSA bounced back with a 1-0 win over Nicholls. The 'Runners lead the Southland with 40 goals this season, but no single player has more than five. Six different 'Runners have four goals or more. UTSA's seven shutouts rank third in the conference.
NEWS AND NOTES
BACK-TO-BACK: SFA's current two-game slide in league play is a rare occurrence. It's just the third time in the last seven seasons for the Ladyjacks to lose consecutive Southland Conference games. The only three-game conference losing streak on the books was recorded during the 2000 season.
BEST FOR LAST: Senior Camille Royer is putting up the best statistical season of her four-year career. She is second on the team with a career-high four assists, and has one goal to give her six points for the year. Her previous best assist total was two, and her best point total before this season was six -- both recorded last year.
HOME RUN: With two wins on the first weekend of Southland Conference home play, SFA has now won five straight league home games and eight of its last nine conference games at home.
SOUTHLAND START: SFA opened Southland play with a 4-0 win at Northwestern State. That marks the ninth consecutive season for the Ladyjacks to win their conference opener. SFA is 9-3-2, all-time, in Southland openers.
WIDE OPENER: The Ladyjacks' 4-0 win at Northwestern State is tied for the widest margin of victory for SFA in a Southland opener. The Ladyjacks opened the 2002 league season with a 4-0 win against McNeese State.
DEFENSE FIRST: The 66 shots on goal allowed to SFA opponents this season are the fewest issued by any team in the Southland Conference. In the Ladyjacks' last 11 contests -- which included a 10-game unbeaten streak -- SFA has not allowed more than eight shots on goal in a single contest and has held the opposition to an average of 3.4 shots on goal per game. Texas Southern, Central Arkansas and Nicholls registered just one attempt on goal each.
SADLER'S STREAK: Sophomore Laura Sadler matched the best goal-scoring streak on the team this year when she scored in four straight games earlier this season. She has five goals on the season, two shy of the team lead.
IT TAKES TWO: SFA is undefeated at 10-0-0 when the Ladyjacks score at least two goals. Additionally, all 11 of SFA's wins this season have come in games when the opposition has scored one goal or fewer. The Ladyjacks are 0-4-0 when their foes register multiple goals.
COMEBACK: Louisiana Tech went ahead, 1-0, in the early minutes of the season opener, but SFA was able to tie the score later in the half and go on to take a 2-1 win. SFA likewise overcame a 1-0 deficit in its overtime victory against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Ladyjacks did not register a come-from-behind win in 2009.
NO OFFENSE: SFA held Texas Southern to only three shots for the game and didn't give up an attempt in the first half. Three games later, the Ladyjacks limited Central Arkansas to just two shots in a double-overtime tie. Both attempts came in the second half. Before this season, the last time the Ladyjacks held an opponent without a shot in the first period was Oct. 30 of last season, when SFA outshot Northwestern State 19-0 before halftime. SFA has held the opposition to five shots or fewer 14 times in the last five seasons with the two shots allowed at Central Arkansas and at Nicholls tying for the second-fewest shots issued during that time span. Texas Southern's three shots are tied for the fourth-lowest total.
MULTIPLE GOALS: Sophomore midfielder Kylie Louw scored two goals in SFA's 4-0 win at Northwestern State. That marked Louw's second two-goal game of the season and the fifth multi-goal performance by a Ladyjack this season. Jordan King, Kim Kimmel and Laura Sadler have also completed the feat.
HIGH-SCORING: SFA's 7-0 win over Texas Southern marked the program's best single-game goals total since an 8-1 win over Nicholls in 2009. The seven goals are tied for the fourth-best total in program history, and the seven-goal victory margin is tied for third all-time at SFA.
SEVEN-FOR-SEVEN: Seven different Ladyjacks found the net in SFA's 7-0 win over Texas Southern. This matches the Ladyjacks' performance in a 7-2 verdict against Louisiana Tech on Sept. 9, 2007, as the most goals scored in a single game without any one player scoring multiple goals.
SHUTOUT IN DEBUT: Freshman goalkeeper Lacey Lee made her first start in net against Texas Southern and came away with her first career shutout as well. She faced three shots total and registered one save in 90 minutes of action. Lee shared a shutout with starter Courtney Bauder when she played the second half of SFA's 3-0 win at Nicholls.
STREAKING: Before the loss at Southeastern Louisiana, SFA went undefeated in 10 straight games with the only non-win being a 1-1 tie at Central Arkansas. The run included a six-game win streak that is the Ladyjacks' longest run of the season and longest win streak since putting together 11 in a row in 2005.
BYE, BAYOU BLUES: SFA's pair of victories at Houston and Houston Baptist weren't just the Ladyjacks' first road wins of the year. They marked the program's first-ever victories in the Bayou City. SFA had a combined record of 0-5 against UH and Rice, coming into the weekend.
SAVING THE DAY: SFA goalkeeper Courtney Bauder turned in her best performance of the year in the Ladyjacks' 1-0 win at Houston. She faced down 16 shots and recorded a season-best eight saves in her first shutout of the year. Bauder has now recorded two-and-a-half shutouts this season.
GOAL STREAK: After going the first two seasons of her career without a goal, Jordan King rattled off a four-game scoring streak mid-season. She posted five goals in a four-game stretch starting against Louisiana-Lafayette and ending against Texas Southern. The four-game scoring streak is the longest by a Ladyjack since Amanda Alders scored in 11 straight games during the 2005 season. King is currently tied for the team lead with seven goals.
FIRST CAREER GOALS: All of SFA's scoring in the 3-1 win over Louisiana-Lafayette came from players who had never posted a goal in a Ladyjack uniform. Jordan King's two first-half goals were the first of her career, as was Becky Johnson's unassisted corner kick goal in the second period.
KING OF THE PK: Jordan King nows holds school records for penalty kick goals in a season, as well as PK goals in a single game. She scored two PK goals against Louisiana-Lafayette, then set the single-season record with her third PK goal of the season against Nicholls.
FILL IN THE BLANKS: SFA has scored a goal in every game this season, continuing a streak of 20 straight regular-season games -- dating to the end of 2009 -- without being shut out. If the Ladyjacks finish the year without being shut out, it would mark the first time in program history for SFA to go an entire season without getting blanked.
SEC-YA: With its 2-1 win over Arkansas, SFA bid farewell to a frustrating history against programs from the Southeastern Conference. In five previous meetings with SEC schools, the Ladyjacks were 0-5-0 with a goal against LSU in 2004 standing as their lone scoring strike.
NO SHOT?: SFA defeated Arkansas despite a 14-7 advantage in shots for the Razorbacks. In the Ladyjacks' 1-0 win at Houston, they were outshot, 16-7. So far, SFA is 2-3-0 when the opposition takes more shots. The Ladyjacks went 1-4-1 last season in games when they took fewer shots than their opponents.
ROAD RALLY: SFA opened the year by losing its first two road games of the season. Since that start, though, the Ladyjacks are 5-2-1 and stand at 5-4-1 on the road for the season. Including neutral-site games, the Ladyjacks went 6-5-2 away from Nacogdoches last season.
GRAND OPENING: SFA opened the 2010 season with a 2-1 win over Louisiana Tech. That marked the fourth time in five seasons for the Ladyjacks to win their season opener and improved the team to 4-2-1 all-time when beginning the season at home.
OUT TO A GOOD START: The 2-1 win over Louisiana Tech marked a first in SFA program history. With the verdict, Tony Amato became the only first-year Ladyjack head coach to win in his SFA debut. Each of the six coaches before Amato were defeated in their first contests. The best first-year record in program history is the 14-4-0 mark Jaime Frias' squad put up in 2005. SFA won the Southland championship that season with a 7-0-0 record.
DIAL 9 FOR ASSISTANCE: Sophomore Kylie Louw (jersey number 9) is among the SFA career leaders in assists with less than two seasons under her belt. She led the team with nine last season and leads the team with six assists in 2010. With 15 career assists, she is now tied for the No. 2 spot on the program's all-time list.
STARTS STREAK: Senior defender Kelli Barnes picked up a red card in SFA's 2-1 loss to UTEP. That caused her to sit out the next game against Louisiana-Lafayette, breaking her streak of consecutive starts at 43. It marked the first game she's missed since 2007. In all, Barnes has started 55 contests in her SFA career.
WORKING OVERTIME: In addition to her impressive streak of consecutive starts, Kelli Barnes has led the team in minutes played each of the last two seasons. She has played at least 90 minutes on 47 occasions in the last two-plus seasons and her only substitution in 2010 came in SFA's 7-0 win over Texas Southern.
FRESH FACES: With eight freshmen and four transfers, SFA suits up 12 first-year players in 2010. The Ladyjacks began the year with 18 first-year players on the roster last season.
FIRST-TIMERS: Starting with its game at Houston Baptist on Sept. 12, SFA played three straight contests against first-time opponents. The Ladyjacks defeated Houston Baptist, Texas Southern and Arkansas-Pine Bluff in succession to finish the stretch with a 3-0-0 record.
NINE WINS: SFA picked up its 10th win with the victory over McNeese State. This marks the eighth consecutive season for the Ladyjacks to pick up at least nine victories and is the program's eighth straight winning season. The Ladyjacks now have eight 10-win seasons total in program history and two in a row after going 10-8-2 last season. The last time an SFA squad failed to reach the nine-win plateau was 2002, also the last time the Ladyjacks posted a losing season (7-9-4).
TITLE TOWN: The SFA women's soccer program has brought an unprecedented five Southland Conference regular-season championships back to Nacogdoches. That total is nearly half of the 13 possible regular-season titles in SLC Soccer history.
BUILDING MOMENTUM: Since its beginnings in 1995, the Ladyjack soccer program has compiled an overall record of 144-128-28. However, the Ladyjacks have really turned the corner in the last seven years. Since the 2002 season, SFA is 99-56-17 overall. In that same stretch, the Ladyjacks have gone 57-16-12 in Southland Conference play with three regular-season championships and a pair of tournament titles to their credit.
SAFE AT HOME: SFA holds an all-time record of 81-36-12 in home games, but that mark is even better at the current venue. Since moving from Homer Bryce Stadium to the SFA Soccer Complex for the 2003 season, the Ladyjacks are 50-9-5 in home contests. Against Southland Conference foes, SFA is a very tough 29-4-3 at the Soccer Complex.
