The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team has qualified for the Southland Conference Tournament for the second year in a row, and, for the second time in as many seasons, SFA will enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed. The Ladyjacks will open SLC Tournament play Thursday with an 11 a.m. game against No. 5 UT-Arlington, according to the tournament bracket, released Sunday night by league officials.
The Ladyjacks went 28-25 on the season and posted a 17-12 record in SLC play to take the No. 4 spot in this week's tournament. Regular-season champion Texas State enters the tournament as the top seed and will play the winner of Thursday's game between SFA and UTA Thursday afternoon. Thursday's other first-round contest pits No. 3 UTSA against No. 6 Sam Houston State with host team and No. 2 seed McNeese State awaiting the winner.
The tournament is a double-elimination format with the championship game -- or games, if necessary -- set for Saturday afternoon.
Last season, SFA broke a streak of 18 years without an SLC Tournament berth, when the Ladyjacks went in as the No. 4 seed. SFA won its first game against McNeese State, then upset top seed Texas State in the semifinals before knocking off Nicholls State for the tournament title, earning the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.
In its four previous tournament appearances, SFA has compiled a 10-5 (.667) record with two championships and three title-round appearances. The Ladyjacks are 1-1 all-time in tournament games against UTA, having defeated the Mavericks in the second round of the 1988 event and dropped a 4-2 decision when the two teams met in the consolation bracket of the 1989 tourney.
Fans can follow the tournament action at Southland.org. Live Stats will be available for every contest and all tournament games will be streamed live on SLC NOW. The entire tournament package is available for $9.95.
