UPDATE
THIS WEEK: After having its 2009 home opener postponed, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team sets its sights on the Baylor Getterman Classic in Waco. SFA was scheduled to host ULM on Wednesday in a doubleheader at Hoya Field. However, inclement weather and poor field conditions forced the games to be postponed until March 11. This weekend, the Ladyjacks will take on Ole Miss, New Mexico and Baylor, as well as Southland Conference foes Northwestern State and UTSA, in the Getterman Classic. The Tournament begins on Friday, with games against Ole Miss and Northwestern State, and runs through Sunday, when SFA will meet Baylor.
LAST WEEK: SFA opened the season at the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational in Austin. The Ladyjacks dropped all five tournament games, but did so against a field that included three teams to receive votes in at least one of the two major softball top 25 polls. SFA's 8-0 loss to Iowa in the opener was the only defeat that got out of hand, as the Ladyjacks followed that performance with a 1-0 verdict against host Texas. On the tournament's second day, SFA led Florida State, 2-3, going into the bottom of the eighth, before the Seminoles took advantage of a pair of Ladyjack errors to earn a 4-3 win. SFA got a rematch with Florida State in the nightcap and wound up on the wrong side of a 10-5 decision. Iowa got two late runs to take a 3-1 win in SFA's last game on Sunday. Sophomore pitchers Monika Covington and Lauretn Luetge each recorded 10 strikeouts on the weekend, and senior catcher Kim Daley paced SFA at the plate, going 4-for-11 with a double, home run and two RBI.
TOURNAMENT FIELD: Ole Miss is coming off a pair of wins at No. 6 Louisiana-Lafayette last weekend that netted the Rebels more votes than they've ever gotten in the ESPN/USA Softball poll. Northwestern State brings a 1-4 record to Waco. The Lady Demons are fresh from a 4-0 defeat at Louisiana Tech that followed a 6-4 win over Memphis in the South Alabama Tournament on opening weekend. UTSA is 2-3 on the year after winning two of its last three games. The Roadrunners dropped Tulsa, 4-3, at the Aggie Classic, then routed Prairie View A&M, 12-2, to close out their opening weekend. New Mexico opened its season with an extra-innings home win over Syracuse, but then dropped two straight against the Orange to move to 1-2. The Bears opened their 2009 season at No. 1 Florida and ended the weekend on a high note, knocking off the Gators, 1-0, in the series finale. Florida recorded shutout victories in each of the first two games in the series.
UP NEXT: SFA travels to Norman, Okla., for a Wednesday doubleheader against the Sooners. The Ladyjacks will then open Southland Conference play with a three-game set at Sam Houston State on Feb. 24 and 25.
