FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin took two games from Southland Conference-leading Texas State over the weekend. Tuesday, the Ladyjacks were rewarded with two SLC Softball Player of the Week awards. Senior Jessica Tullos was named Hitter of the Week, and freshman Monika Covington earned Pitcher of the Week accolades.
In all, the Ladyjacks went 3-1 last week, including a non-conference win at Louisiana-Monroe. Tullos and Covington each played a big role in the team's success.
Tullos blasted a pair of record-breaking home runs during the week. Her first provided insurance in a 6-4 win at ULM and gave her 21 for her career, a new record at SFA. Her second homer -- a two-run job -- proved to be the margin of victory in the Ladyjacks' 2-1 win over Texas State in Saturday's series opener and gave her 10 long balls for the season -- also a new SFA record. In all, Tullos drove in six runs for the week and scored four, herself.
Tullos' Hitter of the Week honor is the second of her career. She first took the award on Feb. 13, 2007.
Covington appeared in all three games of SFA's series against the Bobcats, going the distance in both Games 1 and 3. She took a victory in the opener and worked two-and-two-thirds innings in relief in the second game to pick up her first career save. Covington averaged nearly 10 strikeouts per game in her three weekend appearances.
Tuesday's Pitcher of the Week award is the second of the season for Covington, who leads the SLC in strikeouts.
The Ladyjacks are 30-18 on the season with a 16-7 record in SLC play. SFA hosts Houston Baptist Wednesday in a doubleheader, scheduled to start at 5 p.m. The Ladyjacks return to Southland Conference action this weekend when they travel to San Antonio, Texas, for a three-game series at UTSA.
