
Ladyjacks Resume SLC Play

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - After finishing up their final non-conference tournament of the season, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks will return to Southland Conference softball action Wednesday when they open a three-game road series at McNeese State. The first game against the Cowgirls is set to get under way at 4 p.m. with Game 2 following Wednesday evening. The third game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start Thursday.
The Ladyjacks are coming off a strong showing in the Oklahoma State Mizuno Classic over the weekend. SFA swept the round-robin portion of the tournament, knocking off Centenary, 8-0, Oklahoma State, 1-0, and Texas Wesleyan, 13-2. But the Cowgirls got their revenge in the seeded round of action, notching a 5-1 win over SFA.
The Ladyjacks are 15-11 on the season and 2-1 in SLC play. Sophomore Kendal Harper leads the team with her .430 batting average. Her seven doubles and 15 RBI are also tops on the squad. Junior Kari Hugie and freshman Ashley Struchtemeyer are next, batting .321 and .301, respectively, and are tied for the team lead in home runs with four each. Junior Benet Higgs' five triples lead the team. As a team, SFA bats .265.
Freshman ace Monika Covington continues to pace a solid pitching staff. Covington has a 1.32 ERA and a 9-4 record with four complete-game shutouts. Her 84 strikeouts lead the team. As a staff, the Ladyjacks have compiled a 2.36 ERA with 145 strikeouts on the season.
The Cowgirls are 7-22 this season with a 2-4 mark in SLC play. McNeese State is batting .265 as a team with a team ERA of 8.29.
