
`Jacks Fall in Overtime Clash

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Despite quarterback Jeremy Moses breaking school, conference and national records for pass completions and attempts, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team dropped a 34-31 overtime thriller to Sam Houston State Saturday afternoon in Huntsville. The loss drops SFA to 4-5 on the season and 2-2 in Southland Conference play.
Despite falling behind 17-7 in the first half, and 24-7 early in the second half, the Lumberjacks battled back in the second. Similar to the games against Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls, the `Jacks dominated the second half outscoring the Bearkats 17-7. SFA completed the rally when sophomore Jeremy Moses found junior Duane Brooks up the middle of the field for 21 yards to tie the game with only 18 points remaining in regulation.
The Bearkats got the ball first in the overtime period and scored on a James Aston one-yard run. SFA answered on 15-yard touchdown pass to Dominique Edison, to send the game into a second overtime. The Lumberjacks got the ball first in the second overtime but was unable to score. The Bearkats put the final points on the board when Taylor Wilkins nailed a 28-yarder to ice the game.
Despite the setback, the Lumberjacks dominated the stats. SFA held the football nearly twice as long as the 'Kats. Moses set an SFA, SLC and NCAA record for pass completions and attempts, going 57-of-85 for 501 yards and four touchdowns. The `Jacks also set a school record with 36 first downs.
Texas A&M transfer Cornell Tarrant recorded the team's first 100-yard rushing game of the season. Tarrant finished the game with 111 yards on 14 carries. The `Jacks recorded 627 yards of total offense, while the Bearkats finished the game with 386.
SFA returns to action Saturday, Nov. 8, when they travel to Lake Charles, La., to face McNeese State. The game against the Bobcats is slated to begin at 7 p.m. from Cowboy Stadium.
