SAN ANTONIO, Texas - A weekend of upsets in the Southland Conference continued Saturday, as the league-leading Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks fell to a youthful UTSA squad 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-21) at the Convocation Center.
The loss snaps a 13-match win streak for SFA (15-4, 6-1 SLC), and is the first time the Ladyjacks were swept in a conference match since being swept at McNeese State on October 24, 2003 - a span of 84 matches. It is also only the second loss for the Ladyjacks overall in its last 77 tries.
UTSA (13-8, 4-2 SLC) had not beaten SFA in 17 tries before Saturday, dating back to the 2000 season and were coming off a pair of losses last week to Lamar and Sam Houston.
The Ladyjacks only managed to hit .164 on the afternoon, a stark contrast from the consistent hitting that had been a staple of the team for over a month. SFA had not hit under the .200 mark since a Sept. 6 against SMU. The Roadrunners on the other hand, rarely missed under their home roof, firing at a .358 clip for the day. That is far and away the highest opponent hitting percentage surrendered by the Ladyjacks this season, with the previous opponent high coming from Miami (OH) in the first weekend of the season when the Redhawks hit .243.
Two freshmen, MC Bottles and Amber Williams-Roberts, led the way offensively for SFA with nine kills apiece; however, the Ladyjacks committed 17 attack errors as a team to aide the UTSA upset bid. Williams-Roberts got into double-figure digs for the first time in her career with 12, while conference dig leader Laurel Kuepker added 11.
Kendra Rowland paced UTSA on the day with 15 kills, while Elise Huskey was right behind her with 11.
SFA comes back home to play a pair of conference matches next week, beginning with East Texas rival Sam Houston coming to Nacogdoches on Wednesday, followed by a match with Lamar on Saturday.
