FRISCO, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team was pegged to finish eighth in the Southland Conference this season, according to polls of league head coaches and sports information directors. The Ladyjacks earned 33 points in the coaches poll and pulled 42 points in the SID poll. Last year's conference champion, Texas-San Antonio, was picked to repeat in both polls, earning seven first-place votes in the coaches poll and 10 first-place votes in the SID poll.
In preseason polling a year ago, SFA was predicted to finish ninth by both polls. Jenifer Wells led the team to a 20-28 overall mark and a 9-15 record in SLC play. That performance netted the Ladyjacks a ninth-place finish.
Wells -- now in her second year at SFA -- and the Ladyjacks will begin the 2007 season on Feb. 9, when they open play in the Baylor Tournament. SFA's first home game is scheduled for March 15 against Tulsa. The Ladyjacks will open SLC play two days later with a three-game home series against Texas-Arlington.
