
Softball Hires Assistant Coach

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin head softball coach Jenifer Wells announced Monday the hiring of Chris Watford as her assistant coach. Watford, an experienced coach and fast-pitch softball player will replace former assistant Fred Gillum, who left the staff earlier this year to pursue other opportunities.
Watford joins the SFA team following a short but successful stint coaching in the Mississippi high school ranks. He spent the previous year as the head softball coach at Madison Ridgeland Academy and coached for two years prior to that stop at Washington School. Watford has compiled a three-year record of 72-30.
Before beginning his coaching career, Watford was a graduate assistant with the Delta State softball program for three years. He earned both a bachelor's and master's degree in physical education from Delta State. During his time as a graduate assistant, Watford helped Delta State reach the NCAA regional tournament.
Also an accomplished player, Watford has spent 10 years playing in men's fast-pitch softball leagues, five of those years spent pitching. His teams have competed in the national tournament twice, finishing fourth in 1999.
