`Jacks Survive Scare in San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Freshman Josh Alexander scored a team-high 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball to a 59-55 victory over Texas State Thursday night in Strahan Coliseum. The victory improved the `Jacks to 9-6 (.600) overall and 2-3 (.400) in Southland Conference play.
Senior Marcus Clark scored nine points and dished out four assists in the victorious effort. Clark also became the school's all-time leader in assists Thursday with his third assist of the game. He currently has 385 assists for his career.
Despite being out shot in the game, and being held to a 8-for-30 (.267) performance from the field in the first half, the `Jacks were able to battle their way to the win. SFA finished the game 20-of-61 (.328) from the floor, but knocked down 5-of-11 (46 percent) three pointers to out pace the Bobcats, who shot 17-of-41 (.415) for the game.
The `Jacks also forced Texas State into 19 miscues, which SFA was able to turn into 18 points. The Lumberjacks were also able to minimize the damage caused by their own turnovers, surrendering only nine points off turnovers.
Texas State faced a `one and done' scenario all night, being outscored, 14-0, in second chance points. SFA out rebounded Texas State by three, 38-35.
Senior Anthony Paez scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds. Starters Antuane Miller and Keith Hardaway each chipped in nine points in the victorious effort. Brandon Bush led the Bobcats with 17 points.
The `Jacks return to action Saturday when they return home to face Texas-San Antonio. The game against the Roadrunners is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
