Roadrunners Rally Past SFA

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team jumped out to a big lead early in its game against Texas-San Antonio, but the Lumberjacks couldn't hold off a late Roadrunner charge and fell, 76-67. The loss foiled SFA's bid to win its third straight and dropped the Lumberjacks' season record to 9-7 and their Southland Conference mark to 2-4. Texas-San Antonio improved to 7-9 overall and 2-3 in SLC play.
SFA opened with a big first half, led by senior point guard Marcus Clark. Clark hit 5-of-8 3-pointers in the opening period to pace a 47 percent shooting effort that had the Lumberjacks ahead by 20 points with 8:13 left in the half. But Texas-San Antonio whittled the lead down to 11 (39-28) by halftime and continued to chip away in the second half.
The Roadrunners used a 9-0 run to trim the lead to 55-52 with 7:25 left in the game, and Texas-San Antonio's hot shooting took over from there. The Roadrunners sank 11 straight free throws in the game's final five minutes and hit 67 percent from the field over that span, while the Lumberjacks hit just one of their final six shots in the closing minutes.
The Lumberjacks shot 46 percent for the game and were beaten on the boards, 35-27. Clark finished as the game's leading scorer with 22 points. Senior forward Anthony Paez scored 18 on 6-of-11 shooting, and junior forward Antuane Miller added 11 points.
Senior guard Andre Owens paced the Roadrunners with 20 points. Freshman guard Aldric Reynolds joined him in double figures with 14. Sophomore forward Abe Donlon grabbed eight rebounds to lead Texas-San Antonio in that department.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action Thursday, when they host Texas-Arlington. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
