HAMMOND, LA. -- Needing a sweep in a three game season ending series to give themselves a chance at making the Southland Conference postseason tournament, the SFA Ladyjacks came up short Saturday in both ends of a doubleheader loss to Southeastern Louisiana by scores of 8-0 and 6-3.
SFA (16-29, 8-18) needed to sweep all three games of the series and get a little help in order to claim the sixth and final spot in the postseason tournament, but a tough pitching performance from Devin King (9-7) game SLU an 8-0 win in game one of the three game set. King gave up only two hits in five innings as the Lions scored eight runs on nine hits off three SFA pitchers. Traci Moore (5-11) took the loss as she worked two innings and gave up two runs on four hits.
Carrie Woydziak and Tara Hersey were the only Ladyjacks to reach base with a hit in the opener.
The Ladyjacks struck quickly in the second game, when Ragen Rutherford scored on a two out single from Hersey. SLU took the lead with a three run third inning aided by two of SFA's four errors in game two. The Lions took advantage scoring three runs on only two hits in the third.
SFA tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning when Sidney Rutherford walked to open the inning and Ragen followed with a two out single to score Sidney. Ragen Rutherford scored on an RBI single by Hersey.
Julie Morse (5-8) took the loss in game two as she worked three innings of relief for the Ladyjacks allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out one.
SFA wraps up the 2005 season with a single game Sunday afternoon.
