Lumberjacks Beat Up on Alcorn State

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Marcus Clark began this week ranked eighth in the nation with 7.4 assists per game. The senior point guard fell way off his pace Monday, dishing out just three assists. That's because he was too busy pouring in 25 points to lead the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team to a 75-57 win over Alcorn State in the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
Clark, who had gone three games without a double-digit scoring performance, went 8-of-10 from the field and 8-of-9 from the foul line to post his best night of the season. He did most of his damage in the first half when he was a blazing 9-of-9 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the stripe, his 19 points boosting the Lumberjacks to a 27-point halftime lead. Clark scored the first points of the second half when he connected on a 3-pointer, and SFA (4-2) coasted to a big win from there against the road-weary Braves (0-5).
Two days removed from posting their worst shooting performance of the season in a loss at Jackson State, the Lumberjacks rebounded, shooting 50.9 percent as a team against Alcorn State. SFA's transition game was also running in high gear. SFA forced Alcorn State into 25 turnovers, which the 'Jacks converted into 30 points. SFA owned the paint, outscoring the Braves, 32-22, in the lane.
Freshman guard Josh Alexander and junior forward Antuane Miller joined Clark in double figures with 10 and 12 points, respectively. Miller also grabbed six boards to lead SFA in rebounding. Junior guard Chaz Dykes scored a season-high seven points on 3-of-8 shooting. Clark's three assists give him 40 for the season. He is now alone in second place on the SFA all-time assists list with 358. He needs just 27 to take over first place. The Marshall, Texas native also ripped off a game-high five steals Monday.
The Lumberjacks moved to 3-0 at home with the victory. They'll try to extend that home streak when they continue their longest home stand of the season Saturday against Centenary. The game was originally scheduled for 4 p.m., but has been moved to 7 p.m.
