NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Freshman guard Josh Alexander scored a game-high 18 points Saturday, leading five Lumberjack double-digit scorers in a 94-57 rout of Centenary College in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The 38-point margin of victory is the largest this season for the Lumberjacks (5-2).
Alexander did most of his damage in the first half, when he hit 4-of-5 3-pointers, leading a Lumberjack team that hit 56.4 percent of its shots before the break. The Lumberjacks opened with the lead and never trailed. Alexander knocked down two 3-pointers in the game's first three minutes, the second giving his team a 10-2 lead. His third triple of the night came at the 13:55 mark and put the 'Jacks up by 11, 17-6. SFA continued its hot shooting while holding Centenary (1-5) to 36.4 percent to take a 56-23 lead to halftime. SFA coasted in the second half, and every Lumberjack player who suited up played double-digit minutes.
Junior Chaz Dykes had a breakout game for SFA. The 6-4 guard hit 8-of-12 shots and scored a season-high 16 points to joined Alexander in double figures. Before Saturday, Dykes had not scored more than seven points in a game. Other double-digit scorers included senior point guard Marcus Clark (12), freshman forward Matt Kingsley (11) and junior forward Antuane Miller (10). Clark added six assists, marking the fifth time this season he's dished out six or more. Junior guard Keith Hardaway recorded a season-high five assists. Kingsley recorded two blocked shots to go along with the first double-digit scoring night of his career, and Alexander ripped off a game-high six steals. Miller hauled in a season-high nine rebounds to lead all players in that category.
The Gents were led by junior guard Xavier Burnette's 13 points. Junior forwards Larry Logan and Alexander Starr chipped in with nine points apiece.
The Lumberjacks finished with a team shooting percentage of 50.7. Centenary shot 38.8 percent from the floor. SFA beat the Gents on the boards, 41-30, and forced 21 turnovers, while giving up just 11. The Lumberjacks outscored Centenary, 38-20, in the paint.
With the victory, SFA head coach Danny Kaspar recorded the 300th win of his career. Kaspar, in his sixth season at SFA, has posted a 300-118 mark, including his nine-year stint as the head coach at Incarnate Word. Kaspar is 81-66 as Lumberjack head coach.
The Lumberjacks will begin the second half of their four-game home stand on Saturday, Dec. 17, when they host Paul Quinn College. The game is set to tip off at 7 p.m. in the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
