NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Marcus Clark scored a game high 26 points - 19 in the first half of play as SFA (9-7,3-2) handed the Lamar Cardinals (10-6,2-3) a 70-60 Southland Conference setback Saturday evening in Nacogdoches. It marks the fourth straight game Clark has been over the 20-point mark.
Lamar led 1-0 on a free throw by Jason Grant in the opening minute before Clark hit his first shot of the game to give the 'Jacks a lead they never relinquished. SFA streaked to an 18-8 lead at the 12:32 mark and led by as many as 14 points before taking a 42-29 lead into the half.
The Lumberjacks scored the first four points of the second half to stretch the lead to 17 points and kept the lead in double digits until a lay-up by Alan Daniels with 5:32 remaining cut the lead to nine, 64-53. The Cardinals pulled to within six, 64-58 with 2:45 remaining but were outscored 6-2 down the stretch.
SFA held the SLC's leading scorer, Alan Daniels to only three points in the first half, but did give up 13 second half points which allowed Daniels to lead the Cardinals with 16. He was only six for 20 from the field for the night.
The 'Jacks also moved to 8-2 on the year when outrebounding an opponent as they beat Lamar on the boards by a 42-32 margin. Taylor Moore led SFA on the boards with nine rebounds while Hank Rivers added seven. Anthony Paez and Clark finished with six rebounds each.
Joining Clark in double figures for the 'Jacks were Paez with 12 and Porter with 11 points. SFA shot .436 (24-55) from the field for the game while holding Lamar below 40 percent at .396 (21-53) on the night.
SFA goes on the road Wednesday night to take on UT-Arlington. The Mavericks beatl UL-Monroe 80-76 in overtime Saturday at home. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m.
