Sam Defense Too Much in Second Half

NACOGDOCHES, Texas-- The Bearkats of Sam Houston (14-8, 8-2) stepped up their defensive pressure in the second half Monday night and came from behind to beat SFA (11-10, 5-5) 78-64 in the coliseum. Sam Houston trailed by one at the half and saw the Lumberjacks stretch the lead to five points in the opening minutes of the second half before mounting the rally.
Sam Houston went on a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the second half at the 17:08 mark, 38-36 and took the lead for good on a jumper by Ryan Bright with 14:20 left in the game. Joe Thompson led the Bearkats with 26 points while Chris Jordan added 16. Taylor Moore led the Lumberjacks with a season high 18-points and Anthony Paez added 14 for the 'Jacks. Marcus Clark also added 12 for SFA.
The 'Jacks shot just over 48 percent from the field in the first half of play, but Sam Houston stepped it up defensively after the half and forced SFA into a .267 shooting half (8-30). Meanwhile, Sam Houston continued to get open shots and lay-ups and shot 60 percent (15-25) in the second half to pull away.
The Bearkats also dominated the boards, outrebounding the Lumberjacks 45-25. SFA fell to 0-8 in games in which an opponent has outrebounded them. Eddy Fobbs led the Bearkats with nine rebounds. Taylor Moore, Tim Simon and Justin Thomas tied for team high honors for the Lumberjacks with four each.
SFA has only one day off before traveling to Lake Charles, La. Wednesday night to take on McNeese State in a crucial road game. SFA then returns home Saturday to host conference leading Southeastern Louisiana at 4:00 p.m. ™
