Track & Field Has Strong Opening Day at SLCs

HOUSTON, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team had a solid showing in the first day of the 2004 Southland Conference Indoor Championships Friday evening. The Ladyjacks scored 42.67 points and are second heading into the final day of competition. The Lumberjacks tallied 41 points and are currently first.
Senior Paul Todd got the Lumberjacks out to a quick start winning the high jump title, clearing a height of 6-9.50. It is Todd's fourth individual league title. The Lumberjacks scored seven points in the pole vault when Justin Connell cleared a height of 15-5.00 to finish fifth. Sophomore Michael Ludlow also recorded a mark of 15-5.00 to finish sixth.
The Ladyjacks were led by juniors Jocelyn Stevens and Teresa Murray and sophomore Crystal Chang who earned All-Southland Conference honors Friday. Stevens and Murray cleared a height of 5-6.00 in the high jump to finish in a three-way tie for second. Chang was the SLC runner-up in the pentathlon, breaking the school record scoring 3,664 points. Junior Shametra Boykins recorded a mark of 18-7.75 to finish fifth overall. Freshman Markeisha Edwards scored points for the Ladyjacks in the shot put with her toss of 44-1.50. Edwards throw was good enough to finish eighth overall.
SFA returns to action Saturday at noon with finals of the men's shot put. The track events get under way at 2 p.m., with the women's 60-meter hurdle finals.
