NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team outlasted Nicholls State, 3-2 (26-30, 30-21, 30-26, 22-30, 15-11), Friday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. SFA is now 6-9 (.400) overall and 2-2 (.500) in Southland Conference play.
The Ladyjacks lost the first game in a close battle but fought right back to take the next two games. The Ladyjacks were led by sophomore Lauren Stevens who finished the night with 15 kills. Freshman Laura Cramer had another big night recording 12 kills, nine digs and two blocks.
The Ladyjacks came out of halftime with a 2-1 lead over the Lady Colonels looking to put the game on ice but the Nicholls State took a big lead in the fourth game and rolled to a 30-22 decision to force a fifth game. The Lady Colonels were led by Caley Carter who finished the night with 25 kills and 14 digs.
But it was the Ladyjacks that came out firing in game five as they built a 6-1 lead, behind junior Brittany Burton's 12 kills, 11 digs and three blocks. Sophomore Amelia Mayeaux also added 10 kills and five blocks.
Nicholls State cut the lead to two points, but that is as close as they would get as SFA took game five, 15-11, for the win. Junior Joanna Benestante added nine kills, 15 digs and three blocks. Freshman Lauren Adams led all players with her 51 assists and five service aces.
"We still had some silly mistakes and frustrating moments, but we got it done," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "The team did a good job tonight of stepping up and overcoming the mistakes. If we continue to that they will get fewer and fewer. I happy with the victory and how we fought tonight."
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday to take on Southeastern Louisiana. The match is slated to begin at 4 p.m., in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. Admission is free to students.
