Ladyjacks Get Win at SMU

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team split its two matches at the SMU Tournament Saturday. SFA opened the day with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-17, 33-31) setback against Arizona State. The Ladyjacks turned around in the afternoon session and defeated Tennessee-Chattanooga, 3-0 (30-24, 30-17, 33-31). The Ladyjacks are now 4-7 (.364) on the season.
For the second-straight match junior Deborah Kirkham (Houston, Texas) led the squad, recording 11 kills. Sophomore Lauren Stevens (Schertz, Texas) added 10 kills but the Sun Devils had too many weapons on offense, recording a team attack percentage of .308.
In the second game, SFA took a quick 1-0 lead behind junior Brittany Burton's (Livingston, Texas) 13 kills and team-high six blocks. Sophomore Amelia Mayeaux (League City, Texas) also added 13 kills for SFA.
UTC tried to answer with Kari Krouse's 10 kills but the Ladyjacks were too tough defensively, holding the Lady Mocs to a .046 attack percentage.
Kirkham led the Ladyjacks' attack with 14 kills (.297 attack percentage) against UTC. Freshman Stephanie Figgers (Katy, Texas) led the team with 17 digs.
The Ladyjacks open Southland Conference action Tuesday against the defending-SLC champion Texas-Arlington Mavericks. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Texas Hall.
