NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team defeated North Texas, 4-2, Wednesday night at the SFA Intramural soccer complex. The win puts SFA over the .500 mark for the first time this season (3-2-0).
Both teams surrendered first-half goals as the Eagles took the first lead with Marilyn Marin's goal at the 21:59 mark. The Ladyjacks didn't trail for long as sophomore Kim Gray netted her first goal of the season at 34:50.
The Ladyjacks quickly jumped out of the gate in the second half when junior Christie Mestayer netted a goal to give the Ladyjacks their first lead of the game. SFA was on the attack again when junior Sophia Pantazis netted a goal only 1:09 later.
Sophomore goalkeeper Natascia Michalezki made the lead stand as she surrendered only one more goal the rest of the night. She finished the game with 13 saves.
"Overall this is an exceptional win," said SFA head coach Nicole Nelson. "They are a really good team. If it wasn't for our defense shutting down their top two scorers this win wouldn't have happened. We are really coming together as a team. I'm really excited about the fact that our scoring is coming from everyone and not just one player. We still have some kinks to work out, but we are going to take in one day at a time and just get better each week."
After being outscored, 10-0, in their first two games, the Ladyjacks have rebounded to outscore their opponents, 11-4, in their last three games.
The Ladyjacks return to action Friday when they host Texas-El Paso. The game against the Miners is set to begin at 7 p.m.
