NACOGDOCHES - A wild pitch and an errant throw by McNeese State catcher Sarah Holt setup the game-winning hit by the Ladyjacks' Devin Cobb to give SFA a 5-4 win over the Cowgirls Sunday afternoon. The Ladyjacks are now 22-20 (.524) on the season and 9-9 (.500) in Southland Conference action.
The Cowgirls jump out to a three-run lead in the top half of the first inning after recording three singles, including a single by MSU's Karrisa Wappler that plated two runs. The Cowgirls Corrie Hale made the three-run lead stand up holding SFA scoreless through the first four innings.
The Ladyjacks tried to rally in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with no outs. But Hale recorded two of her 11 strikeouts to get out of the inning.
SFA got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning. After loading the bases with only one out, the Ladyjacks' Crista Hargrove drove in two runs with her single to cut the McNeese State lead to one, 3-2. Hargrove finished the day going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
The Cowgirls got one run back in the top half of the sixth inning and took a 4-2 lead into the bottom half of the seventh inning. The Ladyjacks had runners on first and third with one out when the floodgates opened for the Cowgirls. The Ladyjacks Tara Hersey struck out but reached first on a wild pitch. An errant throw by the McNeese State's Holt allowed Brooke Chandler and Hargrove to come around and score, tying the game at 4. Cobb drove the very next pitch into shallow center bringing pinch-runner Kristen Exline all the way in from second to score the game winning run.
Hersey finished the game going 1-for-4 with two RBIs, while Cobb was 1-for-3 with the game winning RBI. Nicole Carter went the distance for SFA surrendering four runs on eight hits for the victory.
The Ladyjacks return to action Wednesday for a doubleheader against Louisiana Tech. The game is slated to begin at 4 p.m., from the Coy Simms Softball Complex.
