SFA Finishes UH Tournament At 4-1

HOUSTON, Texas -- After spitting a pair of games on the opening day of the Hilton Houston Plaza Cougar Invitational Softball tournament, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team won three straight games Saturday and Sunday to finish the three day event with a 4-1 record. SFA is now 8-7 on the year.
The 'Jacks beat Pittsburgh, 6-5 and lost to Northern Iowa, 4-3 on Friday, but then trounced Texas Southern, 12-0 Saturday in the only action of the day for SFA. The 'Jacks scored 12 runs on nine hits with four players driving in two runs each. Lee Lara, Tara Hersey, Ragen Rutherford and Meryl McGuire each drove in a pair of runs in the game, and each player also scored at least one run. Lara and Jaime Brown picked up two hits in the game as SFA moved its record to 6-7.
Nicole Carter tossed the complete game shutout for SFA, allowing no runs on only one hit in five innings of work. She struck out three and walked two batters.
SFA closed out the tournament Sunday with wins over Sam Houston, 5-4, and host University of Houston, 5-3. The 'Jacks fell behind Sam Houston 3-1 after the Bearkats pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning, before SFA regained the lead in the top of the fifth with a three run inning highlighted by an RBI double off the bat of Carrie Woydziak. SFA added another run in the sixth inning on a solo shot by Tara Hersey to make the score 5-3. Sam Houston pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the final 5-4.
Crissy Autry closed out the tournament Sunday afternoon with a seven inning victory over UH, 5-3. Autry allowed three runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking a pair of batters against the Cougars. SFA meanwhile scored five runs on nine hits with Woydziak once again leading the way as she went 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Woydziak also picked up another double and stole a base against the Cougars. Crista Hargrove picked up a pair of hits for SFA as she went 2-4 with a run scored.
The 'Jacks return to action this week as they travel to Austin to take on Texas before opening Southland Conference play at Sam Houston next weekend.
