The SFA softball team will open the 2003 season Saturday afternoon in Houston as they take on Texas Southern in a scheduled non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. SFA opened the 2002 at Texas Southern, sweeping both ends of a doubleheader by scores of 10-6 and 15-0. The 'Jacks also took a pair of games from the Tigers in mid-April, in Nacogdoches.
Coach Jennifer Poulsen has added 11 new faces to the 2003 rsoter and combined with the return of seven starters from a year ago, has hope for a much better season. Included among the 11 new faces are two additions to the pitching staff, plus some needed help at shortstop and in the outfield. Crista Hargrove, a redshirt from a year ago, also returns for the 'Jacks in 2003.
Four freshmen are expected to start Saturday's opener for the 'Jacks. The added depth by the roster additions will give Poulsen and her staff more options in setting the lineup this season.
Following the twin bill at Texas Southern, SFA goes back on the road Tuesday afternoon to College Station to take on the Aggies. Texas A&M opens the season ranked in the top-25 at number 24 in the nation. The Tuesday afternoon doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. in College Station.
The 'Jacks do not open the home portion of their schedule until March 1, when they host UL-Monroe in the SLC opener for both teams.
