NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin softball coach Jennifer Poulsen has announced the signing of left handed pitcher Nicole Carter to a scholarship offer to play softball and continue her education at SFA this fall. Carter will enroll at the university for classes next week.
"With the addition of Nicole Carter, we've added a real impact player. She will round out the pitching staff by adding a new dimension, a left handed pitcher. I'm very excited about adding another pitcher to the staff," said Poulsen.
Carter, a 2002 graduate of Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento, California joins the SFA softball program after spending the summer months playing with the Roseville Heat, a competitive ASA team in California. For the season, Carter went 13-0 and posted a 0.70 ERA. The 5-6 left hander struck out 85 batters in 95.0 innings pitched. She only walked one batter and posted eight shutouts for the year.
At the plate, Carter batted .273 for the season scoring 21 runs and driving in six.
"Nicole is a power pitcher that also possesses great control. The fact that she only walked one batter in 95 innings of work over the summer testifies to that fact," said Poulsen.
Members of the SFA softball team will begin fall workouts next week after classes resume at the university and will play two fall dates, including hosting the second annual SFA Fall Classic, September 21. A tryout period for anyone interested in walking on with the team will also be held early in September. For more information call the softball office at 468-4011.
