HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team beat Sam Houston State, 3-1 (30-24, 23-30, 30-18, 30-21), Tuesday night at the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks are now 14-9 overall and 8-4 in the Southland Conference.
The Ladyjacks won game one 30-24, behind senior Jennifer Wilson's (Friendswood, Texas) 16 kills and eight blocks. Sam Houston State fought back to the tie the match at 1-1, behind Chrissy Engle's 13 kills. But the Ladyjacks ended that rally in the third game when senior Angie Wood (Houston, Texas) guided SFA to a 30-18 game three win, with her 16 kills and 15 digs.
The Ladyjack defense was too strong for SHSU, recording 89 total digs, 28 total blocks and holding the Bearkats to a .117 attack percentage. Five different Ladyjacks recorded double-figure digs, led by sophomore Deborah Kirkham's (Houston, Texas) 23. Wilson and junior Julie Goodson (Alvin, Texas) each recorded eight blocks, while sophomore Brittany Burton (Livingston, Texas) added seven and 10 kills. Senior Sunni Williams (Houston, Texas) led all players with her 54 assists.
"I thought that both teams played better tonight than what we did earlier this season in Nacogdoches," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "We didn't make as many unforced errors tonight. We were in control of our side of the court and I thought that our defense played very well tonight. Sam Houston had a couple of runs tonight we were able to stop those."
The Ladyjacks return home Friday night to take on Northwestern State. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum. Admission is free to students.
